Site 1 - Crash Crew Training Area Site 1 is an unlined, earth-bermed pit located in the southern portion of the base. The unlined pit was used from the mid-1950's until April 1988 for NAS Fallon personnel fire training activities. The site consisted of two aboveground storage tanks (1,000 & 5,000 gallon capacity), underground piping, and an approximately 25-foot diameter by 3-foot deep unlined pit. The flammable liquids used in the pit were waste products from the fuel farms, aircraft maintenance and vehicle maintenance. It was reported that approximately 90% of the burned materials was off-specification fuel, 9% oil, and 1% solvents. It was also estimated that approximately 800 gallons a week were burned with a total estimate of 1,250,000 gallons having been burned in the unlined pit. The facility only used off-specification JP-5 from 1982 until April 1988. Remedial Investigation Work conducted at the site has included, installation of a groundwater monitoring network, removal of the two aboveground storage tanks and associated appurtenances in 1994, installation of a limited bioslurper free product recovery system in 1997, limited excavation of fuel and solvent impacted soils from the former unlined pit area in 1999. Site characterization/limited remediation identified soil and groundwater contamination (groundwater at 9 feet) with chemicals of concern being benzene, DCE, PCE, TCE, TPH, vinyl chloride. Site Status - 2001 The Navy has completed a "Comparison of Groundwater Alternatives Report" and "Assessment of Intrinsic Remediation" dated March 2001 that included Site 1. These reports and recommendations have been reviewed by NDEP and a response requesting additional clarifications has been forwarded to the Navy. The soil excavated from the unlined pit is currently undergoing biological treatment at the site. |
