HWAAP-B10
BUILDING 101-3 CATCHMENT PIT

SITE DESCRIPTION
HWAAP-B10 consists of two inactive unlined surface impoundments located north of Building 101-3. Each pit measures approximately 15 by 15 BUILDING 101-3 CATCHMENT PITfeet and are 2 to 4 feet deep. The impoundments were in operation from 1940 to the early 1970's and received large amounts of waste water containing TNT and RDX. Ground water is estimated to be at approximately 120 feet bgs but has not been sampled at this site. Visible evidence of TNT stained soils in the impoundment was noted during site investigations. Soil sampling in 1988-92 has confirmed the contamination of the soil with explosives. Remedial Investigation work in 1994 included surface soil and hand auger sampling, and cone penetrometer sounding. Two surface soil samples, two hand auger samples and five cone penetrometer soil samples were collected and analyzed for metals and explosives. Metals (except beryllium) were detected at concentrations below the soil remediation criteria. Beryllium was detected at concentrations of 0.55 mg/kg and 0.69 mg/kg in cone penetrometer samples from 8 and 18 feet bgs. Explosives (except 1,3,5- TNB at 4.9 mg/kg) were detected at concentrations below the soil remediation criteria. The RA was completed in 1999.
