Located in Nye County, Nevada, Hot Creek Valley - (Location Map) extends approximately 183 miles between north-south trending ranges in the Basin and Range physiographic province and varies in width from 13 to 50 miles. The valley is bounded on the west by the Hot Creek Range which rises to an elevation of approximately 10,246 feet at its highest point, Morey Peak - (USFS TOPO pdf), and on the east by the Pancake Range. Elevation of the valley floor ranges from 5,184 to 6,004 feet above mean sea level. Flow is generally from Hot Creek Valley southeastward to Railroad Valley, however, no perennial streams exist in Hot Creek Valley.
Annual precipitation in Hot Creek Valley averages 7.5 inches/year. Vegetation in the valley consists primarily of sagebrush and grasses, while pinyon pine, juniper, mountain-mahogany, and aspen are found at the higher elevations.
