Site Summary

The Facilities consists of construction and operation of the 4 disposal sites, which comprises three Class III industrial solid waste landfill units and one Class II solid waste disposal site, for the disposal of waste as approved by the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection. The Permits to operate provide that interim and final cover will be installed concurrently with ongoing operations. The Department of Energy will perform closure, and post closure care in accordance with the Permits issued by the State of Nevada.

All the Nevada Test Site (NTS) Landfills are regulated pursuant to NAC 444.570-444.7499 - Solid Waste Disposal Controls. Nevada regulation sets standards for solid waste management systems, including the storage, collection, transportation, processing, recycling, and disposal of solid waste. The NTS has one inactive and four active permitted landfills.

The Area 5 Asbestiform Low-Level Solid Waste Disposal Unit P07U is inactive. Active units include the Area 5 Asbestiform Low-Level Solid Waste Disposal Unit P06U, the Area 6 Hydrocarbon Disposal Site, the Area 9 U10c Solid Waste Disposal Site, and the Area 23 Solid Waste Disposal Site. The landfills are designed, constructed, operated, maintained, and monitored in adherence to the requirements of their respective state-issued permits.
