t its September 13 meeting, the Rocky Mountain Board approved the State of Colorado's request to designate CHDTF as a non-exclusive regional facility for the disposal of certain NORM and TENORM wastes in addition to radium processing wastes for which the facility was designated in June 2005.
In addition, the board adopted an emergency rule which clarifies that utility residuals (from water treatment, wastewater treatment, and electricity generation) generated and disposed of in the three-state compact region, that are NORM/TENORM waste, can continue to be disposed of at any facility allowed under state laws. Exporting the waste to a facility outside of the compact would still require approval by the Board.
The emergency rule will be finalized at the Board's November 13th meeting in Las Vegas. In preparation for that meeting, Leonard Slosky, the Board's Executive Director will be holding public meetings in each of the compact states to answer questions about the rule or any other issues related to NORM and TENORM waste. The announcement for the stakeholder meetings and the agenda for the Board meeting is attached.
The Nevada meeting will be held on November 2nd at the Marriott Residence Inn from 10:00am to noon. The Division encourages anyone who may be generating or may have the potential to generate NORM or TENORM waste to participate in this meeting.
